My mother's side of the family tree.
I'm back today on this blog, I thought that I'd pick up where I left off with my dad's side, and move to
my mom's side at least for this week, and even this month, then heading into September and autumn.
Firstly, her family is mainly Italian, but her mom was Ukrainian and sadly, I don't know the year that
my mom's parents immigrated to Canada, however, my mother's name was Florence, and she was
named after the famous Italian city. She was born in 1943 and passed away back in 2016 at age 73.
She had three siblings; a brother and two sisters, only her one sister out in Kelowna, British Columbia
is still alive; Eleanor Gal, her other siblings have also passed away; Dorothy Peristy and Paul Santucci.
Her late parents were Joseph and Mary Santucci. My mom's family lived in the "East End" of my
hometown; Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (January 1st, 1970-present). Florence and her siblings were
all born in Fort William, Ontario back in the mid 20th century, she and her sisters worked in a local
hospital; two were nurses and one worked in the nursing floor/wing office of St. Joseph's Hospital in
Port Arthur, Ontario; I mention the towns of Port Arthur and Fort William, Ontario because prior to
amalgamation of the two towns on said January 1st, 1970, that's how they were known, and still are to
this day to locals including myself and my one brother Eric that remain in our family tree, other than
other extended family that moved away from this region of the Lakehead many years ago and never
returned. Following a very close referendum vote, the new city became Thunder Bay on said date.
Florence attended Selkirk High School, and graduated from the St. Joseph's Nursing School in 1964,
her sister Dorothy graduated from the same nursing school also back in the 1960s, and sister Eleanor
was also employed at the same said hospital/school, the school in the same building as the hospital
was demolished, and the new space became a mental health wing many years later. Florence's mother
was mainly a homemaker/housewife, as many women were back in the early to mid 20th century, and
her father was employed at CP Rail, of which as it turned out was right across the street from the
family home on McTavish Street in the previously said "East End" of Fort William/Thunder Bay.
Florence remained in nursing until the early 1970s, and then stayed home as a housewife to look after
her and her husband Kal's new home in the North Ward of Thunder Bay, and she of course looked after
me and my brother Eric in the same said home, until another move in April of 1985. I think that I will
wrap up today's post, I hope you enjoyed it, and there's much more to come in this story of my
immediate and extended family tree. I will probably alternate between both sides in the days and
weeks to come, to be continued, until next time, and as always; thank you kindly for your support.
